Since 2010, the Foothills Carolina Club has contributed almost $20,000 in scholarship money to 10 local students attending UNC. This year, we are conducting an online drive and asking our local alumni to show their support for the University of North Carolina by contributing to this effort. Some alumni have told me that they give to University scholarships through other various fundraisers conducted by UNC and see no need to “duplicate” their contribution. However, donating to this fundraiser is the only way to make sure that every dollar of your contribution is awarded to a local UNC student from Catawba, Caldwell, Burke or Alexander counties. Monies donated to the other fundraisers are placed into the general fund and awarded to all qualified students.
Of all of the endeavors undertaken by the Foothills Carolina Club, our annual Scholarship Fund Drive is, in my opinion, the most important due to the immediate and long-term impact this money has on the lives of the recipients. Here is a quote from a Thank You note I received from one of our recent recipients.
“…I am a sophomore at UNC Chapel Hill and was informed that I was a recipient of the Foothills Carolina Club Scholarship this year. I wanted to let you all know how much I appreciate this scholarship and what a blessing it is to my family and me. A college education is so expensive but so essential today, and my parents recognize the value of the education that UNC can give me, so I’m sure they appreciate the scholarship just as much as I do. I will continue to work hard throughout this school year to not only have this fantastic experience, but also to make everyone supporting me proud.”
As you can see, these scholarships are very important to the recipients and their families and assist each student in receiving the same world-class education that each of us had the opportunity to receive. Local alumni have always come through in our fundraising efforts, and I am confident that you all will come through again. Our goal is to raise $5,000 by August 1st. This could easily be accomplished if 500 local alumni contribute $10 each, if 100 alumni donate $50 each, or if 50 alumni donate $100 each.
